Postcard Friendship Friday... Happy Valentine's Day

Well it's that time of year again, when we all expect a romantic gesture from our significant other.  This is a little card from my personal collection (not that I received it, he's not quite that romantic).  The reverse sentiment reads: To my sweet Valentine, and is addressed to a Mrs. Mary A. Veneall, in Bloomfield ON.  and that's the whole address. Doesn't that kill you, no zip code, no house number, obviously everyone knows Mary, or maybe just the postman. Hmmm?  (P.S. I just watched the Postman Rings Twice the other night so I can't help but be suspicious, or maybe it's all that CSI stuff.) The locket portion of the card is embossed as are the Capital letters of the sentiment.  Sweet NO? 

I'll be sitting on pins and needles awaiting my card.  Well maybe I better go buy one for myself.   Have a wonderful Valentine you all.

I love this postcard, and I especially love the stamp on the back of this one, King George, 1 cent postage and the address so minimal. How'd they ever do that?

It was printed in Germany, in 1911.One hundred years ago.

Just a little ranting P.S. on "how'd they do that".  One cent all those years ago, you could send a lovely postcard, with just the name of the individual and the town/province.  Today as it has been for 25 years my letter carrier (that's what they want to be called, less gender specific) who is extremely well paid, the postage is up to a lot more than one cent has delivered mail yet again, that doesn't belong to me.  When I brought it to his attention he said well:" you could just walk it over" like H I've been doing his job all these years, but not today. They've just come off some strike or other, now the starting wage for a lettercarrier is $24/hr. I've put a big circle around the address and clipped it to my mailbox, if he doesn't take it, well???? Most homes don't get delivery, letters are delivered to a box and you pick them up yourself,  since "I'm special" just kidding, I'm on an original route and that does not apply as yet, but soon I'm sure.  I'd walk a couple of blocks for 24$ an hour.

All about Marie...and Daniel

I've just completed reading my Josephine B. Trilogy, and now I came across this wonderful postcard Nancy gifted me. It is addressed to Marie Antionette, could it be? anyway, I chose this for my Postcard Friendship Friday because, my son who is away on coarse with the military, has called me more times than he would have if he were here locally, perhaps an angel is whispering in his ear. "Call your mom, she misses you". I think even though he is lonely for his friends, and most probably for his bed, and his own shower, he is having a great time. They built a bridge this week, (like on the River Kwai" He always wanted to do that with toothpicks, except the cat kept knocking it down.

He claims the conditions are comparable to those in the movie, tents, in blistering heat, a lot of rain and most certainly mosquitoes. (This is my princess of boys, he likes clean, and gourmet, he's so fussy the elastic in his underwear has to be specific,)" The food is horrible," he says, "they use plastic cheese in their sandwiches, and white boring bread. " Hmmm ... I've been thinking of building a bridge across my pond! Wonder if he learned to whistle?

I had intended to post this beauty on "Father's Day" and then promptly forgot. It was in my folder for Post Card Friendship Friday, hosted by Beth of the Best Hearts are Crunchy.

This card is another of the gold mine, that my friend Nancy sent me, that she bought for ME in Paris. I love it. I can picture my mom and dad in this scenario with my sister Donna. My mom and dad often said they were so happy to have her "LIVE" as they had lost three infants prior to her during WWII. mostly to hunger, or lack of medication. Donna was dearly loved. Since my parents were post-war New Canadians there was not a lot of money for pictures so I would have to scan the faces of the family in. But, nonetheless I love this card. Happy Postcard Friendship Friday.

I had to add a post script to this post, (not sure that's proper grammar) but I don't collect cards that have not been circulated and Nancy even managed to fit this one into that category, it however does not have the stamp on the reverse side, it's in the upper right hand corner, it's that cool?

Forgert me not, Postcard Friendship Friday

On Wednesday of this week, (too weak to post) I set out on an adventure. You may have read in my "for today" post that I was off to the chiropractor. Since my chiropractor of choice is a million miles away, I dedicated the whole morning for this adventure. I was off on an efficient bus run, well the bus just didn't show, so change of route, I arrived on time for the next train and then bus connections. I then had a 3km. walk. It was raining, I really didn't think I'd make it. I've not walked much since the fall, what with my sore feet and all, hence the appointment. Well I made it. ALL WORTH WHILE. I love this guy. But then, there was the subsequent 3km. walk back. Well usually my inspiration is the possibility of the reduction of the junk in my trunk, but today I just needed more of a push, I looked for excuses not to do the return walk. The problem is I'm so hungry when I walk. Well! I stopped half way and thought I'd call my niece (who lives in the neighborhood and drives) thought I'd stop in for a tea. Well she wasn't home. So off I trotted and waited for the bus connection. Since I was reading Quartet in Autumn This is a book posted by one of my A-Z Wednesday group (can't remember who) in my opinion it's a character study. I'm thinking I like this format. Well, I don't know what it is, but the return trip just doesn't seem so long. I arrived in plenty of time at the bus stop and continued reading this book. It brought to mind a couple of characters in our neighborhood. What has this got to do with Forget-me-nots. Well this is one of my favorite flowers, and the man I thought of had a wonderful garden of this blue plant, his wife knew of my likes and on my wedding day rushed over with a cluster so I could add it to my hat. Strangely enough this man suffered from severe Alzheimer disease. I'll never look at a forget me not without this in my mind. Anyway, since I was so efficient I thought I'd stop off at my local "postcard" store and see what goodies she had for me. Only one, this one. Imagine all of this falling into the "forget me not" thought, I think that's freaky.

Postcard Friendship Friday, Paris

If I could send a virtual kiss, I would, my friend, (I feel privileged to call her that)Nancy from all pulped out, was in Paris recently and look what the mailman brought yesterday. OMG I was beside myself, I think I want to cry as we speak, how very thoughtful Nancy is. Talk about Random Acts of Kindness.

Anyway, it's PFF and here is the first of the most awesome post I'll ever have. The Notre-Dame Cathedral, Southern Transept. Thank You ever so much. Now I'll have to watch the Hunchback Movie and see where exactly the hunchback lived. Have a wonderful day, I already did.

Happy Easter,

I don't usually post another postcard on Saturday, but I hit the mother load this year and I'd love to share with you. Yet again my cousin from Poland sent me this cute little card. I love the greetings written all around the perimeter. I didn't show you her writing, but it's so different. I think Bob of Holland suggested a book where we could compare the changes of card styles in accordance with times, I thought that was a great idea. I do store my cards in season sections and yes there is a definite difference in styles over the years. But the wishes are the same. My Polish vocabulary isn't that extensive, so I tend to write the same greeting all the time, and if you are really not good you could write a Easter greeting on a Christmas card and get away with it. Aren't my cousins kind to say it was o.k.

This is probably my oldest card. It was mailed in April 1906, in Eastman Quebec.
The colors are very muted, but the design is embossed right into the paper.I'm dying to add some silver edging to cover up the discoloration, but I shall control myself.



There is no greeting or sentiment on the reverse, just a simple name, and a 1cent stamp.

Once again my cousin from Poland sent Easter Greetings, what I particularly like is the handwriting. It's the most unique penmanship ever, and they all write like that, as my mother aged it was difficult to read, but my cousins is clear enough, and I'm building my vocabulary to boot.

PostCard Friendship Friday... #2

Oh my! just stumbled across this piece of personal history. This is a postcard of the very exclusive (in it's day) tourist camp.
The bottom of the card reads" Hillbrow Tourist Camp, Highway 8 between St. Cathrines' and Niagara Falls. Mrs. R.E Cudney , Prop.

When I saw this card in a stack I knew I recognized the name, if I'm not mistaken, (and Alice will correct me if I'm wrong, hopefully) I think it was Suzanne Cudney that was a runner-up to the Miss Hamilton Beauty Contest along with my sister Donna, Miss Polonia. Probably 40 years ago. Boy am I old.

This tourist camp was "the place" for tourists in the area, now I think it might be a shopping mall. It use to seem so far away from our home in Hamilton, now it's the "burbs" of Hamilton, the bedroom community, unfortunately many of the orchards went as well, and it's a very speck of the green belt it use to be. Well this is my personal postcard post for a Happy Postcard Friendship Friday.

Welcome to Mellow Yellow Monday. We had a fabulous snow storm on Friday, and there wasn't a single colour around, well the weather got warm and all we have around us is grey, and dirty streets. So, I thought I'd post a little sunshine. Be sure to check out the other posts of mellow yellow here.
This is a postcard that I neglected to post on Friday, for Postcard Friendship Friday. I participated in the scrapping Olympics, (needless to say I'm not a gold metal winner). So I get easily distracted. Whilst I was scrapping I found this "recording" postcard it plays a polish tune. You can watch it here.

Well since my Valentine's Day was a bust, I can post this "45 record postcard" the tune is none other than Burt Bacharach "I'll Never Fall in Love Again". I'm not sure who sent this card there is no sentiment or signature, but it was sent to my mother's address a number of years ago, probably 40 years ago. I just needed some sunny flowers today.

I have neglected my Friendship Fridays over the last few weeks, so time to reaquaint myself with the great stuff on Marie's site. Marie over at The French Factrice
hosts Postcard Friendship Fridays, she is chalk full of info along with her posts of great post cards. Do visit.

My contribution came from a quick visit to the Antique Fair at Sherway Gardens. It's hard to believe that I worked in that mall for nearly 7 years, and now I don't know where anything is. But, it was o.k. to get lost in the Antiques, I browsed at leisure with friend. As is in my banner at the top this blog was created as a research vesel for my romance novel, I've done little but collect ideas for characters. What does this have to do with this postcard, well... When we were growing up and listening to stories of my mother's youth we were told that she not only had a pony around but actually got a stalion whom she named Zigmund. I don't think this was a typical horse name, but, anyway shortly after her marriage the war broke out and Zigmund was taken to be used by the army, so we don't know if it was a Black Stallion story in the end or something more gallant. Seeing this postcard reminded me of everyone who's little wanting a pony, and from the one very little photo I have of my mom when she was very young this looked like her, so I'm buying a little girl for my scrap book. Enjoy PFF.

I live in a city where we are privledged to be part of the Olympic Torch Relay. I hope it's not too cold or icy for me to watch. It happens to be on a day that I walk that route (to complete my 100 mile challenge, fat chance eh!) I thought I'd share this postcard each resident in the city received. It's really quite a nice design, I shall tuck it up into the yearly journal. Have a great PFF and visit the rest of the gang that Marie hosts.

As usual on Friday I like to get into Marie's meme, with mail.

You know how sometimes you get up in the morning and think of someone, and you just can't stop thinking about them, well today it happened to me. Hermina just popped into my head, and I can't stop thinking about her. Hermina is the cousin of my husband's godmother. I met Hermina through Jenny (the godmother). Jenny annually has a family and friends picnic, and godchildren and their spouses and extended family are included. Hermina is a retired school teacher. Over the past few years she's been travelling abroad to teach english. Anyway the minute I thought of Hermina I also thought I must share these beauties with you,
One year at the picnic she gave my son's these fabulous stamps from China. They didn't seem to be impressed, but I was. I really thought the cover and overall presentation was interesting. It is about 81/2 x 11 hard card board, (almost book board, now there's an idea of what to do with it)..

and check out the great popcorn recipe on my kitchen blog, Hermina made it, and I could almost taste it. It might be movie night at my house tonight.

It's only fair that you find neat postcards when with friends. Leslie and I had a stopover the other day whilst having an important appointment, and look what I found.

You know the old saying "the road to a friend's house is never long" well that is very clear in this card. This card was sent in 1913 down the road from one friend to another. And while I had intended to post this last week, (during Marie's friend/unfriend post) I think it is important all the time.

I'm so glad to be posting in this meme again. I've been well into reading and taking note of authors which I have not read. Well tonight I finished a little book recommended by Susan Williamson , entitled Griffin & Sabine, An Extraordinary Correspondence.by Nick Bantock. While I found the book a little unusual, and not one I might have picked up on my own, but owing to the fact that I like Susan's taste in many other things, I thought I'd give it a go. I love the postcards and stamps pictured in it. Have a wonderful PFF.

Happy Post Card Friendship Friday

Long before there were scrappers, there were photo albums. This particular one I brought back from Poland, originally for my photo's from my trip. Most of those photos were mistakenly put into one of those sticky photo albums, most of those photos went golden yellow. I should have put them in this album. It's old fashioned, black pages with no plastic covers, just tissue/onion skin paper between pages. Oddly enough the photos would have been "photo safe" in it.




Now I've chosen to use this particular book for my postcards. The front and back covers are I think wood burnt if that's the correct term. I haven't decided what order to put them in, but I'll figure it out.






The Initials on the back cover, are my cousins Lucina's , this was a gift from her. I so loved the book that she took her photo's out and gave it to me. I really appreciate that now. I even have a label with my name on it(which will not come off) this book was in a heritage display and I wanted it back so every piece had to be labeled. Won't be doing that again.
