Question of the Week

Jenners from Find Your Next Book Here posts a question each week and I thought rather than just commenting on her post, I'd post my own answer.
Question of the Week: Life-Changing Books
This week question comes from Steph The Bookworm:
Has any book you've ever read been life changing for you?

I have a series of books that changed my life. I know I read I think everything about fertility and having babies, and raising babies and child development, but the one book I think I read that most changed my life was quite simply the first book I read by Mel Levine, Educational Care. I then proceeded to read "A Mind at a Time, The Myth about Laziness.

Synopsis:
Educational Care presents a wealth of information regarding weak attention control, phenomena related to: reduced remembering, to chronic misunderstanding, deficient output, delay skill acquisition, and to poor adaptation. In addition, this book has chapters for the provision of education care, assessment and management, and implications and applications for the misinterpreted child. The Appendixes is a valuable resource for every teacher to peruse and use for those students whom could benefit from such helpful planners and organizers.

Educational Care gives tremendous assistance on both fronts:educational strategies in the classroom and strategies that the home caregiver can provide to assist children with learning problems

I continued to read books on this subject throughout my childrens school days, and still from time to time read things, but that first book, changed my life, gave me hope and most of all TOOLS.

Saturday Morning Rush

A number of years ago we were told that in the computer age things would be so fast that we would only need to work four days a week. Well for most of the work force that has not happened. We seem to do more and more all the time. We keep ourselves busy, we keep our kids busy and then when they grow up they keep us busy. Saturday morning use to be clean the house for moms and dad would cut grass, or do household repairs, kids would watch cartoons. Well I don't know about anyone else's house but that does not happen in my house, anymore. For years now my eldest son has had a job, and when he didn't he always had somewhere he needed to be. Now my youngest is off to work on Sat. morning, yes it's just a part time job but, my nest is getting emptier and emptier. My husband and I hustle around me making lunches, Andy driving them to jobs, or trains or something. But there is no such thing as a relaxing Saturday morning, or any morning anymore. We all sort of crash on Friday night from the school week, and then it's Saturday already. Where is our four day work week. I could go for a Ninja Turtle or Ghostbuster cartoon right about now. And a few little toy cars around the house, instead I have rearend coil sitting in my kitchen, for a full size vehicle. I've just finished empting the bumpers in my backyard of rain water, and I guess I'll have to drop a mosquito puck in so I don't get West Nile Virus. Yes Saturday Morning is a Rush, and so is every other day of the week. We could sure use an eighth day couldn't we. I think I might start a campaign. I shall be accepting suggestions for a name. How about Sloday? No stores would be open, no schools, and no one would be able to leave their homes. They would be forced to watch cartoons.

An exciting day.

It's Tuesday, and that's the day I spend with my 88yr. old mother. Today was dentist day. I don't remember oral hygiene being being all that important in our family as I was growing up. Maybe it was, I just don't remember it. I do remember going to the dentist and sitting in the waiting room next to a quite famous wrestler of that time. You see my mother loved to watch wrestling on Saturday night so as children and then teens we were allowed to stay up till 10 p.m. on Saturday because our mother was watching wrestling. So you can well imagine my excitement at the dentist's office when that famous wrestler was going in for a filling, just before me. Having rarely been to the dentist I didn't know that everyone got one of those little bibs chained around their neck. I assumed that the wrestler was so ferocious the dentist did this to protect himself. As I peered around to the examining room I was half hoping that the dentist would cause some pain and thus get wrapped into a half nelson or sleeper hold. Alas nothing like that happened. I followed in somewhat less nervous than I should have been, got a tooth ripped out and off I went. As my sister and I sat in the dentist's office today with our mother and the various components of her mouth were examined, cleaned and tuned up I thought who the heck thought of all these gadgets. Being the mother of a wanaby engineer, I imagine some brilliant engineer with a toothache. Of coarse when I got home I had to check it out on Wikipedia. The engineer also makes us watch all those weird shows, you know, How it's made. and Mythbusters etc. on the Discovery Channel. Did you know that even though Paul Revere is famous for riding around, he in fact was quite a denture craftsman. We certainly would not have thought of that, would we? I always liked Paul Revere. I'm so glad that he had other work, and politics was just a side line. I wonder if the British didn't show up would he have done some outstanding work in denture creations? Anyway till the next visit. Don't forget to brush your teeth.

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday to my wonderful son,  it's bee 33wonderful years. Hope this year proves to be the best yet.
