A Thousand Splendid Suns...

Finished this wonderful read today.  My interest of life in Afghanistan was first piqued a number of years ago shortly after 9 11.  My young reading group were reading books short listed for the RED MAPLE AWARD. One of the books was Deborah Ellis' "The Breadwinner".  I can tell you it really made me think.  My next read was the Kite Runner and now A Thousand Splendid Suns.  Wow! war is ugly to say the least.  But it never ceases to amaze me how ugly people can be to each other.
This book follows the lives of two young women through life just before the Russian Invasion of Afghanistan and through to the early 90s.  Heartbreaking, angry, and unforgettable are only a few ways to describe their trials, their relationship and the incredible will to survive the experience.  All I can say is, just when you think your life is difficult... think again.

I loved his first book Kite Runner, and this book was amazing as well, especially as this one was about women.

I agree with you. This was a great book. I liked it even better than the Kite Runner.

Your last line of the review was just perfect. Think again indeed.

I could never get interested in a book set in that country, so I admire you for sticking with it, dear Irene. I have a knee-jerk reaction to anything set in an ultra-hot, dry climate. But I'm sure I have more to be thankful for than even I can imagine. Thanks for your longer comment on my blog. I hope you're working through that blessed choir of laundry and I hope your mom is resting comfortably today. I know you'll take some time to cook up something delectable and do some reading. Hope you get a nap too! Enjoy the pristine white landscape and stay cozy!

So true Irene. When you think you have it bad, there are others who are much more worse off than you. Haven't read either book. Great review Irene.
