Snapshot Saturday and book hop

Start 'em young

I think the first memory I have of reading was quite one shared by my sisters.  My sister Donna was the eldest (and still is) and she got to go to the"book mobile".  We lived in a rural part of the city, and as children of European immigrants, my parents were busy putting food on the table, so while books and reading were important, we didn't buy a whole lot.  Donna, being the responsible one, and of school age, was allowed a library card.  So she'd go on Saturday morning and bring home the allotted amount, you can imagine it was her choice, so we got to read what she wanted to read.  I can remember reading True Confessions (trash) when I was quite young. We were sisters who hid under the covers with a flashlight, and read.  My mom would continue working after we went to sleep, she was a dressmaker.  I do have to say that our parents trusted us.  Maybe that's why we are so perfect, Ha! Ha!, but we did know the consequences if we did not meet their expectations, it just didn't happen.  That would have been the worst punishment, to disappoint.  However, I digress.  We didn't have a television until I was probably 11years old, so we made up our own entertainment.  We actually played outside, and then we read, and we certainly helped around the house a great deal.  So when we got an opportunity to have a book to read, we loved it.  We all read, all five of us, even my brother, which I think is rare a man in his "older" adult years reading.  When my boys were young I read to them every night, and as they went into their teens I read what they read, just so we could talk about it.  I always (still do) feel, I could trust them to choose their own books if we could talk about it and bring it into perspective.  As men they have chosen books that I'm not interested in, but I still listen, sometimes, not always REALLY hearing, but they still share sometimes.

So I guess I'm a born reader, my husband on the other hand has NEVER read a book from beginning to end, and he doesn't understand why there are so many books around the house.  He reads the paper from cover to cover, and can memorize the bargains in the advertising section, so I know he CAN read, but...

How about you (o.k. I can`t seem to get a question mark here)

On a personal note:  Today is eight months since my mom passed away, how dare the world go on when I`m so sad.  I do still have a great many books that my mom had in her book case, sadly by the time she felt like reading them she couldn`t see.  So, read whatever you like, life goes on too quickly.

P.s. Margaret from Books Please, I'm having some issues commenting on your site, so that's me with all those iiiiireeejii s no idea what's happening.

I do miss reading with my children. There were a lot of years when it was just part of our nightly routine. I also sometimes read what they are reading now.

Reading to and/or with your kids is so rewarding!

Sorry you're feeling sad about your mom, but I know how you're feeling...my mom died 18 yrs ago on Aug. 7 and was buried on the 10th. Even after all these years I miss her so much and it still hurts like it was yesterday.

HUGS!

Irene, hugs to you on this day! Loved your early reader story. As a child, I loved to read with a flashlight under the covers, and encouraged my kids to do it too.

Irene, I'd noticed all the iiiis! Wonder why that's happening - I thought maybe it was a security thing.

I like your book blogger hop answers. I used to get books from our local library on a Saturday too - but I was the one choosing (I just had one sister and she was 6 years younger than me so we read very different books). And I read in bed under the covers with a torch! My mum wasn't a dressmaker, although she was very skilled and made my clothes and my sister's. We didn't have a TV either until I was 11.

I know how you feel about your mum - it's been too many years ago that mine died and I still miss her. And it is sad to think of the books we'll never get to read. I do think about that these days - so carry on reading :)

I've always been a voracious reader. And now I am even more so with a Kindle! I remember well the trips we took to our local branch library is a little shopping center where the grocery store was also located. I went straight to the section where they kept books about horses, LOL! I always thought it was neat that they would loan you books to read. We didn't have two nickels to rub together, so books were a precious commodity!

Dear Irene, I cannot believe it has been eight whole months since your mother passed. And yet in some ways it seems like longer. We've both been to far too many funerals in the past year. Like you I am utterly besotted with books, have been for as long as I can remember. My little granddaughter, age five, is now a book lover. Her mother tells me she can read anything she picks up, and would rather read than play outside or eat dessert. I say huzzah. Reading is life.
