Memories of chocolate...

This past weekend, the Long Term Care Facility where my mother resides hosted a International Food Fair. It was amazing at how the residents reacted to these things.  The big favorite was scalloped potatoes.  We must remember that many of the residents are octogenarians with dementia.  They probably didn't remember eating it, but then again.  We didn't, meaning my mom and our family didn't eat those kinds of foods.  We had traditional meals, on low budgets.  Not much meat, many many soups, vegetables and delicious cakes.  My mom never made pudding, or much commercial type quick foods.  So when I eat these commercially popular foods I think of where and when I ate them.  Chocolate pudding, the instant kind, it was all the rage on the television commercials, I ate in grade 7.  I was working on a geography project with Rosella DeMarco, her parents weren't home, it was soon to be supper time and Rosella went up stairs and made Kraft macaroni and cheese, and chocolate pudding.  It was done in a flash, well, as fast as it took me to complete the project.  It was the best supper I've ever had.  Or so I thought.  I made this combo many times in college with similar oohs and ahhs from my roomies.  So even today when I have Kraft dinner, chocolate pudding is the dessert.  No freakin wonder I'm the size I am.  When ever I make lemon pie, I think of Pani Dubiel, and fruit flan I think of Pani Bahrji, cream puffs, well I can't remember the ladies name but, you know what I mean. So if scalloped potatoes are your comfort memory go there, mine is chocolate pudding, or lemon pie, or cream puff (I make them) or apple cake or...

I remember jello pudding being such a treat when I was a kid. Tuna Noodle Casserole at my friend's Shelley and Kelleys is my comfort memory. Why? who knows, because now I would not touch it at all! ;o)

These are still some of my favorite foods, dear Irene. TG and I adore macaroni and cheese, and yes I still use Kraft although I spring for the deluxe then "doctor" it with cream and extra shredded cheddar, then bake it. I dream about it all the time but have no business eating it. As a kid my favorite thing was a hamburger and a salad. My mom used to make it for me special.

It is funny how "ordinary" foods can seem exotic and so special when you don't eat them very often.
