THIS WEEKS LETTER IS: H

I can't believe this is the only "H" book on my shelf. However, it is a great reference book. I believe I bought it when my eldest was one of those crying babies and I was at my wits end trying to get some sleep for both of us. I might add that while it may have been a help back then, I still don't sleep much, and he's the reason for that as well even though he is 23. I remember quite clearly strapping him to my chest one night (my husband worked nights) so I wouldn't drop him or roll over on him because I could feel myself falling asleep. Anyway

Synopsis: An excellent reference book of today's most popular herbs. Each entry is accompanied by a full description of the herb, followed by notes on cultivation and special uses. Fully illustrated and superb colour drawings to help identification.

Vogue food writer, Arabella Boxer, has created over 275 exciting recipes using the fresh flavour of herbs. They range from light wholesome soups and vegetarion dishes to delicious sauces and refreshing , health-giving drinks.

This book is to come out on Oct. 6th, 2009, it's by the author of "The Time Travellers Wife". Click on the link to listen to the story a little.

My favorite "H" books are those made/created by hand. I love this art form. As a sewer I find this one of the most relaxing projects I can possibly do, often on Sunday afternoons with a group of great gals we laugh we talk, and we sew. Why do you need to make your own books for, you ask? Well, I need to not only love what I'm doing but also have a purpose for doing something and while I don't think my kids will appreciate them now they might someday.

For example, the "full metal" jacket book you see here with the clock on it is my journal for my son Sasha, just thoughts about him, feelings, and yesterday I even put a recipe in. When I was expecting him I craved pie. So I baked everyday a pie, (you can just see that chubby girl popping out) On the day I went into labour and he was born, it was a peach/apricot pie. yummy. And then there is the fat chubby book with the beads, my gift record, the piano hinged book with the skewers on the spine, for my chinese food recipes etc.

The one with the tulips is a little book my friend Lois painted, just to note some thing we splatters did through the years.

I just posted this photo to remind you about this book. Lennie posted this for the letter "D". Oh my gosh! a must read. I'm supposed to be doing laundry, but the dryer is disturbing me through this one, so laundry will have to wait. Yes it's that good.

This weekend two special couples are celebrating their anniversaries. My sister and her husband will have been married 38years, and my friend Jola and her husband 33years.

It was a busy week for my family 33years ago. My mother and I made Jola's wedding dress and all the bridesmaids and most of the guests. I was the maid of honour at her wedding. My sister Alice was expecting her first baby. On Friday while we were at rehearsal Alice had my beautiful niece, who's birthday was yesterday. Then the wedding happening and my sister and her husband had thier 5th anniversary celebration during that time. I felt it fitting to post my postcard today of a "married couple". How do I know they are married, well for one thing he has his hat in his hand, she's bringing him the flowers.(and it says so on the back of the postcard) So couples have a happy day.

(the) Final Solution is my choice today.

photo of the book I own.

The Final Solution is a a novella about an investigation led by an unknown old man, whom the reader can guess to be Sherlock Holmes, during the final years of World War II.

This is rather a short read, by Michael Chabon, and one my son recommended highly. I did enjoy it, even though I found it quite wordy or perhaps that captured the Sherlock Holmes character well.

Postcard Friendship Friday

Marie at Vintage Postcards - cpaphil hosts Postcard Friendship Friday. I love this meme!

I don't know where to begin with this one, as you may have read I've really gotten hooked on the reading blogs. I love to read, but I rarely give myself permision to sit and do so. It seems I always have too much to do and not enough time to do it in. Well, as I'm getting older and observing more, I'm thinking "heck with the dust, let's read" well in my pursuits I discovered this postcard. The Myrtle Tree Legend, I don't know what the legend is because the print is so very small that I can't read it. So I'm thinking is my vision getting so bad that my reading is being compromised. Put the book aside and decided to wash walls and ceilings and cupboards in my kitchen. Whilst doing so I came across the ceiling fixture which too needed a cleaning. When I took the fixture off, I discovered that there was only one light bulb in a three possible bulb outlet. My husband is a very lucky man, he was not home. He's very frugal, so here I'm all upset that I can't see, and there just isn't enough light. So that problem solved. I must tell you what I know about the legend of the myrtle. Myrtle in our Polish heritage, or so I've been told, is a good luck plant. Baby's have it pinned to their christening gowns, brides to their veils. Well, when my niece was getting married I went out and bought two plants for my mother to keep so we would have enough to put into the brides bouquet as well, I don't know if this was the dementia already rearing it's ugly head or what, but, when it came time for me to take the myrtle my mother "really" didn't want to give it. I'm a little bossy and took it anyway. On the weekend of my nieces wedding, we had a blackout, rehearsal was by flash light, and then just as the photographer is about to arrive a flash thunder storm. Some Luck eh! Well me being superstitious as I cannot help being, picked up the myrtle and returned it to my mothers home. Of coarse she didn't know this and was checking out my nieces bouquet and wanted to know where it all is and she proceeded to carry on. So I told her I gave it back, we were about to have a domestic when we were interrupted, I don't think she talked to me for a week or two and that was fine. So that's my take on the "Myrtle Legend" P.S. my wonderful niece is living happily ever after so...

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday

Theme Thursday, Rhythm

Theme Thursday this week is Rhythm. For me the beginning of the new school year also means the return of rhythm to my life. While I love having the freedom of summer, of late it has been a tossed salad of schedules and events to fit into my day and still have a glimpse of "family time". My kids are men, my husbands is a retiree with too many part time jobs and I'm a tired co-ordinator. I'm tired of keeping count of 3 different schedules, 3 different meal choices, and 3 different uniforms to wash. So when we return to school where I can write down everyone's (except the retiree) down on my fridge schedule it gives me some sense of organized life. What am I saying, the more organized I think I am the more things get scrambled. Oh I so long for the days of,off to elementary school, and be gone the days of juggling menus for the multi diet preferences of my household. Oh well life goes on, and I suppose I shouldn't sweat the small stuff...Ok. now what to cook?

THIS WEEKS LETTER IS: E

My choice this week is "East" Edith Pattou.

Rose is the youngest of seven children, meant to replace her dead sister.

Maybe because of that, she's never really fit in.

photo of the book I own.
I've only just begun to read this book, but already I'm not wanting to put it down, no blood and gust and not a whole lot of sex, (I suppose there was, since she's the seventh child) and I quite like that. This was to be part of my "Compass Challenge", I just got started extremely late." So it's now just an enjoyable journey. Have a great A-Z Wednesday.

A- Z Wednesday D... Pattern Designing

Apparently September is Sewing Month and as a sewer I would be remiss to not post a book related to that subject. I've owned this book since my college days. I keep it for reference, but, our instructor, or professor or what ever you could call her Ms. Morgan was so thorough that I rarely have to look things up, she drummed the info into our heads never to be forgotten. She was wicked, she would have made a good nun of the old days, you know when the nuns still slapped us around with rulers. Anyway, this book is timeless, it really doesn't matter if we've gone computer or if styles change, the process remains the same. I'm not sure I could have taught myself, but...

Here is how you can join A to Z Wednesday.
