A-Z Wednesday C... Crocodile Soup

It was a tough choice today, the letter "C". Everybody knows C is for cookie. Well my Book of Great Cookies is so beat up, well used and loved that I dare not scan it and further expose it to the elements. Maida Heatter's the author cook, I think the little joke in the foreword was so cute I must repeat it, "Grandma is such a good cook that even her garbage smells great." Let's hope that all our grandchildren feel that way.

So on to the letter "C" and my choice "Crocodile Soup", I chose this book because sometimes you just need to laugh.

Synopsis
Gert Hardcastle is thirty-something (remember the series) and unlucky in love. As the novel opens, she thinks she has found The One-Eva, who works in the cafeteria of the northern museum where Gert catalogues the Egyptian artefacts. As Gert embarks on her hilarious and poignant pursuit, she looks back on her eccentric childhood.

And then there is the Canadian Scrapbooker. I subscribe to this magazine only because it reminds me that I should be "Doing". The inspiration is only that a great little gal "Lara Brooks" is a contributing paper artist and I've gotten to know Lara a little and have enjoyed many an creative evening with her, so I wait for Lara to give me a push, to get "doing".

Bogenvilia in bloom...

Early this summer my sister A.S. brought us (all 3 sisters) a bogenvillia, it had something to do with the trip they took in the spring. Well mine has been blooming like crazy. I'll be sorry when it has to come in, because I know it will never be as nice. I was checking out Olga's blog and saw her photo's from Portugal and thought "hey my bougainvillea looks that good". Perhaps not so big, but here it is.

Mellow Yellow Monday #33

I know you must be sick of me posting my garden, but truly I'm out there so much working that it's great to actually see something happening that isn't a weed. I've been invaded with this clover like thing that I just cannot get rid of. I suspect by it's vast quantity that it may be the result of bird seed. When I first went out to pull the little darlings my water lilly was closed up as the sun came round it opened. I'm enjoying this because soon it will be fall, very soon.

If you click on it to make it larger you will see the muddy leaves on the water lily, all those down pours have splashed dirt onto the flower petals, short of the vacuming them I don't know what to do, so I'll let nature clean it up for me. Daniel is so into not disturbing the "eco" system of his/my pond.

Have a Mellow Yellow Monday. Check out the other posts here.

Postcard Friendship Friday

Our dear hostess is not well, so I'm dedicating this little post to her well being. We miss you.

This is a summer costume from the region of Slask. I don't have a Polish key board so the accents on the Slask are not visible, it is pronounced Shlonsk, with the on sound almost like oink. I'm particularly attracted to this little postcard because it also displays some folk art on the little chest the young man is sitting on. It's obvious to me that global warming was not yet an issue at the time of this dress, since we are all covered up. Can't imagine wearing so many layers in the summer.

Happy PFF.

A-Z Wednesday... The Boleyn Inheritance

It's A-Z Wednesday the letter B. Reading on the Beach is hosting a challenge check it out.

Welcome to my little post about the letter B.

This is the first of my 3 4 5 challenge. I'm quite looking forward to being back in time. I love historical fiction and this one has that gorgeous dress on the cover. Philippa Gregory is also a favorite author.

I'll do my review when I'm finished, at the bottom of this post in Italics. check back.

Saturday Suds

It's been another busy week, so my house looks like it. So after a million loads of laundry, and cleaning toilets, and baths, and showers, I decided to take a lunch break and re- claim some fresh air for my lungs. So I made a sandwich and sat down and guess what was on the boob tube. Elvis, well need I say more. Elvis in a movie with Mary Tyler Moore. I had to look up the title and the general story on the net, since I came in about 2/3 of the way into the movie. It's amazing how antique it all looked. It was a big deal to have nuns dressed in regular street cloths, with legs showing and hair. I know when we were children and the nuns at school still dressed in traditional habits, we always wondered if they had hair. But how far out, nuns with Elvis.

W lover

When I re-read my post for yesterday and then the link within I realized I must love the letter W. It reminded me of the good old days with Sesame Street.

Well bright and early this morning, my eldest son called to let us know he would soon become Lieutenant Dan, yup you heard me right. Well the only W I could think of was WAR. I've tried really hard to discourage him, but it seems he's set, and if you know Dan he is awful to convince. So you can see why I long for the good old days when we would walk about the house singing Sesame Street Songs, and collecting bottle caps, (that were not beer). It doesn't seem like that long ago. What happened. Well I guess he grew up. And yes, I know it's only the reserves but I know this kid well enough to know he's easily swayed. So now I'll
have those car parts for a lot longer than I thought. So that's the flavour of the day, I hope it is just of the day.

A-Z Wednesday... The Alchemist

Today is ABC Wednesday,(well it's really Tuesday, but I'm posting early) I hooked onto this site because it drives me to read, instead of watching wayyyyyyyyy too much T.V. and since there is nothing worth watching... So here's how it goes. Reading at the Beach is hosting an ABC Wednesday check it out.

Todays letter is A. My book is Alchemist, The. (I'm a library techy so the is not a significant part of the title, or at least I'm not letting it be today)

This story , is about a Shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point him in the direction of his quest.

This short book is one, my son passed on to me for some unknown reason, but it's todays quest or should I say tonight's quest. I love reading the books my kids read, (they are really men now) just so we can have something more than chores to talk about at the dinner table.

I really enjoyed this short read, no sex, no real violence, just old fashion treasure hunt. It's celebrating it's 10th anniversary and it should celebrate.

Mellow Yellow Monday 31

I can't believe Comics have been around so long. Some of them are now called graphic novels, or is that just me behind the times. Perhaps that's what they have been called for a long time, anyway. Have a mellow yellow Monday.

Theme Thursday, Kiss

I'd like to participate in the Theme Thursday and this week it's a Kiss. However, I just don't have the same skills these writers do to portray some wonderful imagine so here's my little version

When my kids were little this was a favorite show, so I HAD to post this version of the KISS. What's in a kiss? Much I should think. I certainly knew that's what tied the knot for my husband and I. We didn't live together or anything like that, just not something that you did 31+years ago. I'm not sure he's as good at anything else as he was at planting one on me, I'm sure that was the only reason I went out for New Years Eve, the thought of getting an all out New Years kiss was GOOD. And then there is the kiss on the boo boo, it heals everything. And yes of coarse "you get enough germs to catch pneumonia"| But if ever you are in doubt, it is in his/her kiss.

Mellow Yellow Monday

It's Mellow Yellow Monday and in Ontario it should really be a Mellow Monday. It's actually a civic holiday, much of the government buildings and liquor stores are closed not sure what else. The weather is A OK and it's a great gardening day. I'd love to go somewhere with my men, but they are both working and my husband is putting together a presentation on his favorite subject ( which I shall not mention, because it is a whole "nother post). So it's just me, you know I'll get distracted from cleaning and do other things. Anyway, my little yellow photo is a badge I use to have a roll of for when my boys were feeling a little out of sorts. I think Daniel needs that today. It seems every time he has my husband's car something drastic happens that is just not his fault. Yesterday he was just moving the car out of the way so I could pull the weeds growing in the interlocking driveway, and the windshield cracked. We expected "old yeller" to be very loud, but I think "old yeller" knew it was like that and didn't freak out. So today's award goes to DANIEL "you are a great kid".

FYI
Origins Of Simcoe Day
Monday August 3, 2009
CityNews.ca Staff

For many people the holiday Monday in August is just that. A welcome day off in the middle of the summer, no more questions asked.

But how much do people know about the man we're supposed to be celebrating today, John Graves Simcoe? For most the answer is probably "not much."

Still, he's who Simcoe Day is named for, and he was most notably the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, putting Toronto on the map. Perhaps that's why although not everyone in the province celebrates the August holiday as Simcoe Day, Toronto citizens do.

Simcoe made his name during the American Revolution, was appointed Lieutenant Governor in 1791 and arrived in Upper Canada a year later. He had initially established the capital city in what is now Niagara-on-the-Lake, but as the threat of American attack increased he sought a more secure location. That location is where Toronto now exists.

Today he has both a street and a lake named after him in Ontario.

And though Toronto recognizes Simcoe Day, this August break is more widely known as simply Civic Holiday in many parts of Canada.

However it goes by a variety of names both across the country and in other areas of Ontario. For example, it's British Columbia Day in B.C., New Brunswick Day in New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan Day in, where else, Saskatchewan.

In Ottawa it's known as Colonel By Day, in Burlington it's Joseph Brant Day, and in Guelph it's John Galt Day.
